Brief Thoughts on BodyBuilding

Above is the trailer for Generation Iron, a new documentary following some of the top contenders for the 2012 Mr. Olympia.  The film has the same producers of the cult classic ,Pumping Iron, which spring boarded the careers of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno.  Below is the film in its entirety.  Thank you, youtube.

Keri and I are seeing  Generation Iron this Friday night, I believe there is only 1 theater in the metro area showing it.  I have never gotten to into bodybuilding but I certainly respect and appreciate the discipline, sacrifice, and passion these men and women put into their sport.  Yep, it is a sport.  If cheerleading, table tennis, and curling are sports, then bodybuilding certainly is as well.  Is bodybuilding a narcissistic endeavor?  Absolutely, but so are many of the things that we humans do.  Are these guys genetic freaks with *help* from a vial?  Of course, c’mon.  But I also guarantee that 99% of society could not do what they do with their bodies even with PED’s.  It’s a part of their sport, just not a part that is openly discussed.  Right or wrong, that comes down to you.  Would I take PED’s?  Ah HECK NO.  But I am not trying to dethrone this guy…

Phil Heath, Denver’s own

I prefer the physiques of Frank Zane and Arnold of yesteryear and the ‘CrossFitter’ build over the current pro bodybuilders but that is me (and many, many others).  But yes, my butt will be in the seat to watch this documentary Friday night (which has gotten GREAT reviews).  I am not predicting a packed house, in fact I am guessing we will have PLENTY of leg room.  Bodybuilding is a very polarizing sport, and includes many different classes (figure, physique, natural, etc.) but in the end it’s a celebration and appreciation of the human body.  THAT, I can get on board with.  Especially when the haters tend to look like this…

With that said, here is what I will be enjoying before my dinner tonight
