- 20kg KB Jerk 5x/arm
- Ab Wheel 5x
- 20kg American Swing 10x
- Dips 5x
- Repeat for 5 sets
- 2 x 36kg KB Sumo Deadlift 10x
- Dips 5x
- Repeat for 3 sets
Keri decided to try a Zumba class last night at the gym and to say that she loathed is to put it mildly. When she got home, I was genuinely curious about what a Zumba class entails but she didn’t even want to discuss it. It was extremely comical to see how visibly upset she was by the experience. From what I pried out of her the class consisted of some salsa like dance movements with an accompanying “…and 1, and 2, and 1, and 2.” Keri is a strong girl and likes to lift the iron, Zumba was not for her. I wanted to know if it is possible that Zumba can provide a decent aerobic workout? She said it was possible if you are familiar with the movements and push yourself, so that’s something. Mostly she just clenched her teeth, shook her head, and promised that we would have a ‘hard’ workout on Tuesday to redeem herself. Love that girl!
I have no idea what Zumba entails and have no real interest to find out but if it is getting people moving around and sweating, that’s better than riding the sofa right?! Do I think people would benefit more with resistance training? Absolutely. Keri did say the demographic of the class was mixed but mostly middle-aged overweight women. I say good on them for them for getting active, but don’t be afraid of the iron.
So here is the workout we will be doing tonight. I want to note that I love working out with my special lady friend and it really is quality time spent with your significant other. I highly recommend couples to workout together (there are two married couples in my KB class and it’s a joy to watch them push and encourage each other), give it a try and you may be surprised how much you like it.
THAT SAID, when I work out with Keri, we usually stick with just kettlebells and bodyweight exercises just because the power racks are usually full and it’s a pain in the butt to switch the weights so often with the barbell due to different strength levels. Kettlebells keep it simple, we just grab our 1-2 different bell sizes and claim our corner of the gym. Just something to keep in mind…
